Here at Recharge, we believe one of the latest gaming technology, Virtual Reality can ease and improve ones mental health by placing an individual into their idea of Utopia (ideal perfect place).
What is Virtual Reality?
Virtual Reality (VR) is a 3D computer generated environment which can be interacted and explored by people. This virtual environment is presented to our senses in such a way that we experience a sense of presence in an animated world. VR has a seamless connection between the players head and eye movements, this gives the person appropriate responses such as a change in perception, ensuring that the virtual environment is enjoyable yet still very realistic.
Why does it feel so realistic?
Virtual reality can seem like a person is being magically transported to a different world while still being at home, it is an exciting technology but, we rarely ask why does it all seem so realistic?
Immersion refers to how well technology can simulate the ways we perceive and sense the world in our everyday life. The brain’s interpretation of the senses which create our understanding is called perception. It is this interplay of sensation (using vision, hearing) and perception (our brain’s interpretation of this information) that creates our experience of reality.
How does VR headset work?
VR headsets have something known as the six degrees of freedom which allows for head tracking. The system plots your head in an XYZ plane, and measures head movements by forward, backward, side to side. The sensors that allow this to work are called gyroscopes, accelerometers, and even magnetometers. Headsets create as much of a realistic reality as possible to trick to brain into thinking it is somewhere else.
Head tracking must be less than 50 milliseconds otherwise the user could get nauseous. In addition to this the screen’s refresh rate must be upwards of 60fps.
To complete the sense of reality, VR headsets must have 3D sounding, this is through the use of wearing headphones, but is optional.
High end brands of Vr headsets include Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Sony. However, you can also purchase a cheaper headset where you can place your phone in and it can create the same sense of VR.
